Hello, I'm Avontay (pronounced "uh-von-tay"). I am a first-year Philosophy PhD student at the University of British Columbia. I earned my M.A. in Philosophy from the University of Alberta and my B.A. in Philosophy (hons.) with a minor in Religion from the University of Manitoba.
I primarily work on biomedical ethics, collective action problems, and public policy. I am also interested in metaethics, normative ethics, animal ethics, effective altruism, the philosophy of religion, the epistemology of disagreement, and the free will vs. determinism debate. After my PhD I would like to pursue a postdoctoral fellowship in Clinical Ethics and a second masters degree in Public Policy afterwards. In my spare time you can find me listening to music (primarily rap, R&B, and classical), watching films, and drinking coffee with some baked goods. I also volunteer at Ethics Bowl Canada as a national- and regional-level judge and serve as a case development committee member. Links: Phil People: https://philpeople.org/profiles/avontay-williams |
